Session Prep & Planning FAQ
Everything you need to know about mountain weather contingencies, sunset timing, kids, and fast gallery turnaround.
What happens if mountain weather turns bad or high winds hit? +
Utah mountain weather can shift quickly in late autumn. If heavy rain, dangerous wind gusts (25+ mph), or sudden mountain snow make shooting uncomfortable or unsafe, we will reschedule at zero penalty to you.
I monitor live Open-Meteo elevation forecasts and check radar 48 and 24 hours prior to our session. We can either pivot to an agreed-upon backup date or adjust down in elevation to a sheltered valley spot if high-alpine passes get blown out.
When is the best time of day to shoot, especially in the canyons? +
We aim for the last 60–75 minutes before sunset for that rich, warm glow. However, mountain topography plays a major role: steep ridges in Big Cottonwood or American Fork Canyon block direct sunlight 45 to 60 minutes earlier than the valley floor.
When you select a location, I calculate the exact canyon shadow time so we aren't caught in flat shadow prematurely.
Any advice for sessions with young kids or toddlers? +
Keep it relaxed and exploratory. The best family photos happen when kids are tossing leaves, walking trails, or being held—not trapped in rigid posing.
- Feed beforehand: Hungry kids get cold faster in mountain air. Bring clean, non-messy snacks (fruit pouches, marshmallows, crackers).
- Warm layers: Kids feel canyon chills first. Thick knit sweaters or hidden thermal tights keep little ones smiling.
- Nap schedule: If mountain golden hour falls near evening routine, consider a slight afternoon nap adjustment so everyone arrives refreshed.
How fast do I receive my photos, and can I order holiday cards in time? +
All portrait sessions feature a fast 3–5 business day delivery.
You receive a private, high-resolution online gallery with full digital download and personal printing rights, giving you plenty of time to choose favorites, design holiday cards, and order prints well before seasonal lab deadlines.
Can we bring our dog, and are there canyon parking or permit fees? +
Dogs are welcome at several locations (including Butterfield Canyon, Yellow Fork, Daybreak, and Wheeler Farm). However, because Big Cottonwood Canyon (Silver Lake and Donut Falls) is a protected watershed culinary water source, Salt Lake County strictly prohibits dogs.
For locations with entry passes or canyon travel (like Silver Lake or Tibble Fork), clear transparent pricing is specified up front so there are never surprise fees.
